Hattiesburg, Mississippi (May 31, 2013) – It’s a great time for the people of the City of Hattiesburg and State of Mississippi who are celebrating their latest economic progress. A press conference was held by city and state leaders on Thursday at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to announce an additional 1,000 jobs through General Dynamics IT in Hattiesburg. In February, the company announced that 250 new jobs would be available to the Hattiesburg area.
With the emergence of new career opportunities and a low unemployment rate, Hattiesburg is a national example of hope for a rebounding United States economy.
Members from the Area Development Partnership, the Mississippi Development Authority, Forrest County Board of Supervisors, and Hattiesburg City Council worked with Marcus Collier, Division Senior Vice President, Health and Civilian Solutions of General Dynamics IT, making it possible to bring new jobs to Mississippi citizens. These jobs will be housed at the former Steinmart building at the Clover Leaf Center.
The news of the increase in work available in the state has boosted not only the economic morale of Hattiesburg citizens, but in Mississippians throughout the region. Mayor Johnny DuPree echoed these sentiments in his final words to those who attended the press conference:
“There are many members, many people out there, that are residents of Hattiesburg and the greater Pine Belt area that are looking for positions. They are looking for jobs. And this is what you [General Dynamics IT] brought to us. You brought jobs to an economy [with an unemployment rate] that is 8% or less, and it’s going to be even less after this. What a wonderful place to be.”
